Importing a Map (Windows)

Import from Avenza Map Store
On the Map List screen, tap the 'Map Store' button to import a map from the Avenza Map Store. This opens the Avenza Map Store where you can get free maps. Learn more about the Avenza Map Store.

Import from other sources
On the Map List screen, tap the + button to import a map.


 
You can import a map from any of the following sources:

  • Device Storage 
  • QR Code (if camera installed)
  • URL




You can import these supported map formats: Geospatial PDF, GeoPDF, GeoTIFF, JPG (packaged with TFW & PRJ or JGW & WKT in a ZIP file), and the .avenzamaps format.
 

Device Storage
You can load maps from your device's storage (internal memory or memory card). This includes Dropbox and OneDrive.

  1. Tap 'From Storage'
  2. Tap a map you want to import.
 


  
Device Storage > Dropbox
Dropbox is a cloud storage solution for all your photos, docs, videos, and files. Maps stored on your Dropbox can be imported to Avenza Maps.

  1. Tap 'From Storage'
  2. Select Dropbox.
  3. Avenza Maps will redirect you to Dropbox.
  4. In Dropbox, select which maps you want to import, then tap Import. You will then be redirected back to Avenza Maps.





Device Storage > OneDrive
OneDrive is Microsoft's cloud storage solution for all your photos, docs, videos, and files. Maps stored on your OneDrive can be imported to Avenza Maps.

  1. Tap 'From Storage'
  2. Select OneDrive.
  3. Avenza Maps will redirect you to OneDrive.
  4. In OneDrive, select which maps you want to import, then tap Import. You will then be redirected back to Avenza Maps.


QR Code
Avenza Maps features a built-in QR code reader that allows you to import maps by scanning QR codes displayed on signs, posters, maps or the web. Note a camera is required to be installed to access this function

  1. Tap From QR Code.
  2. ​Scan the QR code.

URL
You can load maps by entering a web URL.

  1. Tap From URL.
  2. Enter a URL of a compatible georeferenced map. The map will automatically download to your device.




Custom URL Scheme
Enter a custom URL schema pdfmaps:// or avenzamaps://, to open the file in the app.
For example add the prefix to a map in the following format: 
pdfmap://www.mywebsite.com/maps/Toronto.pdf OR avenzamaps://www.mywebsite.com/maps/Toronto.pdf 

After adding a prefix simply share the URL via email or message and click the link. The link will automatically open in Avenza Maps and the import of the map will begin.

Supported Map Formats

A PDF embedded with geographic information. Many applications can create geospatial PDF including MAPublisher and Geographic Imager

​TerraGo GeoPDF

.pdf

A PDF embedded with geographic information. GeoPDF is a proprietary format of TerraGo. 

GeoTIFF

.tif, .tiff

A GeoTIFF is a TIFF file embedded with geographic information. 

JPG

.zip

A JPG must be packaged with either TFW & PRJ or JGW & WKT in a ZIP file. 

Avenza Maps file

.avenzamaps, .pdfmaps

A format used to import multiple maps at once (such as for a map collection). Note this format can only be imported through a Web Import.

In a text editor, enter the following:

Version: keep the version as is.
Name: enter the folder name between the quotation marks.
Collection: enter the path to each map between the quotation marks.
Save the file with a .pdfmaps extension.
