How can I load maps with no internet connection?

Custom imported maps (non-map store) can be loaded without an internet connection provided they already exist on the device storage, or you have a laptop/computer with the maps on the hard drive.

iOS device & Mac or PC (iTunes File Sharing):

  1. Connect your device to your computer and open iTunes
  2. Click Apps and scroll down to see the File Sharing section
  3. Select Avenza Maps in the apps list
  4. In the Avenza Maps Documents box, click Add and browse for a georeferenced map (acceptable formats include GeoTIFF, geospatial PDF, and GeoPDF)
  5. On your iOS device, open Avenza Maps, and tap on the '+' icon to import a map
  6. Select From iTunes File Sharing
  7. Tap to select which maps you want to import, and tap Import


Android device & PC (Windows Explorer):

  1. Plug in device via USB cable
  2. On device, open the Notification bar (swipe from the top of the screen)
  3. Tap the "USB connection" notification
  4. Ensure "Media Device (MTP)" is enabled
  5. On computer, use Windows Explorer to copy and paste map file to Avenza Maps folder on device (or any other folder that you can access from the device)
  6. On device, open the app and tap on the '+' icon to import a map
  7. Tap on "From device storage"
  8. Locate the file you just added and select Import


Android device & Mac (Android File Transfer)

  1. Ensure "Android File Transfer" software is downloaded on computer
  2. Plug in device via USB cable
  3. On device, open the notification bar (swipe from the top of the screen)
  4. Tap the "USB connection" notification
  5. Ensure "Media Device (MTP)" is enabled
  6. On computer, use Finder to locate map file, click and drag into Avenza Maps folder on Android File Transfer window (or any other folder you can access from the device)
  7. On device, open the app and tap on the '+' icon to import a map
  8. Tap on "From device storage"
  9. Locate the file you just added and select Import


These steps also work when wanting to import KML/KMZ features as well as Shapefile (Pro subscription only).
